Bar-headed Goose (Anser indicus)

 The Astronaut Goose ! 

   A fascinating Goose that breeds in the high altitude lakes of Tibet and winters in the wetlands of peninsular India. Geese are the highest flying birds. During it’s annual migration, it flies across the highest mountain range, the Himalayas, upto 29000 feet (even above Mt Everest) at an incredible speed of more than 80 kmph and can cover 1500 kms at a stretch. 

   It has a uniquely evolved cardio respiratory physiology, a special type of hemoglobin to combat the hypoxia at 29000 ft, where Oxygen levels are < 10% of sea-level! It combats high altitude hypothermia (where even the tissues would freeze), by flapping it’s wings to generate heat, rather than gliding. The down feathers help to retain that heat. Airline pilots have reported sightings at cruising altitudes of aircraft. The flock flies in ‘V’ formation, to benefit from the draft generated by the bird ahead. The lead bird in the ‘V’ rotates places with other birds.

‘Myself a pediatrician, born, brought up and practising in Aamchi Mumbai had a deep fascination for birds since school days. 

Long years of professional education and setting up practice kept my passion for birds dormant.

For the last 20 years, I have found work – life balance; travelling frequently across remote habitats of India and abroad, seeking to find birds and photograph them – with the wish to open the world of the birds to everyone.

I am also a Marathon runner and an avid trekker.’

अंतराळवीर हंस!

     हा आकर्षक पक्षी  तिबेटच्या उंच सरोवरांच्या प्रदेशात  प्रजनन करतो आणि द्वीपकल्पीय भारतातील पाणथळ प्रदेशात हिवाळा व्यतीत करतो. हे  सर्वात उंच उडणारे पक्षी आहेत. वार्षिक स्थलांतरादरम्यान ते हिमालयाच्या सर्वोच्च पर्वतराजीमध्ये  २९००० फूट (माऊंट एव्हरेस्टपेक्षाही  उंच ) उंचीपर्यंत ८० कि.मी. प्रतितासापेक्षा जास्त वेगाने उड्डाण करतात आणि एका दमात १५०० कि.मी. अंतर कापू शकतात . 

    या पक्ष्यांमध्ये एक आगळीवेगळी व  विकसित रक्ताभिसरण व श्वसन यंत्रणा आहे. उंचीवर वातावरणातील प्राणवायूचे प्रमाण खूप कमी असते . याला तोंड देण्यासाठी या पक्ष्यांत  एक विशेष प्रकारचे  हिमोग्लोबिन असते.  जेथे प्राणवायू पातळी समुद्रसपाटीच्या १०%पेक्षा कमी आहे अशा उंचीवर उड्डाण करताना त्याला हायपोथर्मियाचा सामना करावा लागतो . तेव्हा हा पक्षी त्याचे पंख फडफडवून उष्णता निर्माण करतो .  खाली टोके असलेली पिसे उष्णता टिकवून ठेवण्यास मदत करतात. विमाने ज्या उंचीवर चालवली जातात तेथेही हे पक्षी दिसण्याच्या घटना वैमानिकांनी नोंदविल्या आहेत . हे पक्षी ‘V’ आकारात उडतात; त्यामुळे आघाडीच्या पक्ष्यांमुळे तयार झालेल्या वाऱ्याच्या झोताचा लाभ मागून उडणाऱ्या पक्ष्यांना होतो . समूहातील पक्षी आळीपाळीने आघाडी सांभाळतात .
